You'd think that by heading south of the Arctic Circle the weather would improve, but for us it signalled a threat of snow which was to follow us and catch us up on occasion all the way to the southernmost tip of Norway.
Our first major stop on the way south was the fabulous city of Trondheim. We had a great day of sightseeing there and gorged ourselves on a great seafood lunch and masses of waffles and jam.
From there we followed the coast including the short but majestic Atlantic Highway which hops across a myriad of islands by bridges and causeways. We discovered you have to have deep pockets to tour this part of Norway, we were constantly being hit for road tolls, bridge tolls, tunnel tolls and ferry charges. With what little spare cash is left we have been treating ourselves to a regular afternoon coffee and cake.
We decided to head inland and over one of Norway's most famous drives known as the "Trollstigen". It is an amazing stretch of road that climbs over a seemingly vertical face onto a high mountain plateau. When we got to the top we were surrounded by snowy peaks and some stunning views.
It turned out that the next day's driving would surpass even the Trollstigen as we drove over 3 more mountain passes, each higher and more stunning than the next. The higher we went the more challenging the road conditions got and it was exhilarating stuff. To cap it all we were blessed with crystal clear skies and the scenery was breathtaking. It was quite simply the most amazing day of driving ever.
We decided to spoil ourselves and went on a day trip which was a mini version of the famous "Norway in a Nutshell" tour. It took in part of the Bergen to Oslo railway, a mountain railway down to the village of Flam and a cruise through the fjords. It was quite a day but we were a bit shocked to be surrounded by hundreds of other tourists, having hardly seen any so far.
From there we've been forced to stick to the coastal road as the temperatures have been falling along with the snow inland, we have passed through the coastal towns of Bergen, Stavanger, Egersund and Flekkefjord finally departing Norway from Kristiansand.
So it's back to more temperate climes and a return to Denmark as we wend our way home.
