Our journey through Botswana was a fairly brief one, crossing the Kalahari desert from north eastern Namibia to the north west of South Africa. We will return to do justice to all Botswana has to offer towards the end of our journey when we meet up with our friends Jan & Paul.
The Kalahari has far more vegetation and population than you may expect of a desert, but despite this we still found plenty of wilderness and sand along the way to make the drive fun and challenging.
We entered Botswana through a little used border crossing, in fact the last vehicle to pass was about 4 days before us! Here we survived the first of several meat inspections intended to prevent the spread of foot and mouth; after a few cigarettes, which we keep for such purposes, changed hands the inspector didn't seem to notice our 2 steaks and pack of sausage :-)
It was very surprising to meet an overlanding South African couple on a tiny sand road while crossing the desert; we spent a lovely evening camping in the bush with them. They warned us to be vigilant of wildlife in this part of Botswana. The very next night we had a hyena patrolling round our camp at dusk as we did the washing up; a hasty retreat to the Land Rover and an early night put an end to his ominous intentions!
So now it is back to South Africa and Donkey Valley farm, where we spent a couple of months volunteering at the beginning of the year.
