So from the Grand Canyon we hit the road again back to California, and as fate would have it we actually got hit by a tumbling tumbleweed that flew into our path, but Crust, our designated driver for the day, was not phased and headed straight to the Ludlow truck stop for fuel (Ludlow T-shirts only $5.95). After a classic truckstop burger and fries it was time to hit the road again and finish the 7 hour trip to LA.
Once we reached LA we dropped the hire car back at LAX, and bought a one way train ticket into the ghetto of downtown LA, only to emerge into the crazy world of showbiz on the Hollywood Blvd, home of the 'walk of fame'. As we tried to get to our hostel, the road was blocked and soon realised it was for the premiere of Rush Hour 3. Apparently, Paris Hilton was about, so to get our first glimpse of someone famous we hung around for a bit, but after 5 minutes the long day of travelling had caught up with us and we couldn't really be bothered, so headed straight for the hostel.
The next day we got up early and checked out Hollywood, we were amazed how dirty and badly kept Hollywood and the walk of fame was but had heard that Santa Monica was the place to be. LA is definitely car orientated so thanks to the awful shuttle bus service we took the 2 hour round trip accross LA to Santa Monica. The trip was well worth it though, just to see the delight on Crust's face when we found the Baywatch-style lifeguard towers where The Hoff had once blessed!
Stopping for a snack, we knew we had to be in America when the bloke next to us ordered a 24oz 'Monster' burger, which was obviously annouced on the tannoy and the waitress took his photo, ready to be placed on the wall of fame in the restaurant if he ate it all. After our poor effort of a salad we strolled down Santa Monica Beach to Venice and Muscle Beach, home of hippies, tattoo parlours and black men in thongs working out. That was enough for one day!
We managed to get ourselves on a star tour around Beverly Hills to look at the celebrities front gates and get ourselves on their CCTV cameras. Nevertheless, it was still worth it, as we saw the homes of: Paris Hilton, Halle Berry, Drew Barrymore, Lyndsey Lohan, Tom Cruise and the Osbournes, to name a few.
The next day, we checked out and decided that as we were in the home of the movies, it would be rude not to watch Transformers, only to realise that Megatron was housed at The Hoover Dam. (Apologies if you haven't watched the film but at least you now know the ending!) If only we had known this a few days earlier!
......Fiji next stop, hope everyone is well back home love Paul, Mak and Crust xxx
