Journal brought to you by Sophie
Monday 05th March
Today was a very good day! We had decided to go on a tour of the Cape Peninsula, with a company called Day Trippers. It was extremely good fun and we met some really nice people. Here's a run down of who was on the trip;
Jorgan - pervy old German pensioner who took a photo of me and Tami whilst someone else was taking a photo of us with our cameras, then proceeded to grab me in a photo and said I could replace his wife of 40 years anytime...EWWWWW!
Clare - up herself English woman who thought she knew everything because she had done some travelling before.
Jonathan aka CREEPY - rude guy who spent his whole time sighing and acting bored. Plus he had weird eyes and was really rude to me and this other guy when we were on the bus.
Lauren - Lovely, sweet English woman who had won a competition to South Africa.
Three fat American students - need I say more?
Tim - weird English man who had been on this tour 4 times previously...
German couple - the man kept interrupting the guide which was so annoying.
Eddie - Wicked Sri Lankan who had been brought up in Canada but now lives in Seattle although he had been working in London for a year as a marketing officer for a game called Cranium. Lucy, this should mean something to you as it is your favourite game. He was fab!
Tami - Amazing, talented beautiful English girl who was very interesting and kept us entertained.
Sophie - Stunning red head who was clearly the most intelligent of the bunch.
We journeyed along the coast to Haut Bay (also known as wood bay due to the fact that it used to be an area covered in forest before the British came and cut them all down...typical) and then hopped on a boat that took us over to Seal Island. You would not believe what we saw on that island. Yes millions and millions of otters. JOKE. We saw lots of cute seals and they were swimming around and sunbathing and have a great time. The boat had a glass bottom but the water was too murky and all we saw was kelp forests...However Tami had fulfilled her dream of riding in a glass bottomed boat so she was happy.
Our next sight was a place called Boulders which is a rocky beach frequnted by hundreds of penguins. They are absolutely adorable. We saw some in love, some with babies, some doing strange dance routines like the ones Tami and I used to invent, some sitting on eggs and some swimming around. There was also a loner penguin sitting on a rock, which was sad but we invented a story up about him so it was all good! Interesting facts about penguins is that
1) They are very social animals who hunt together
2) Penguins remain life long partners
3) When penguins go through their moulting phase they cannot go in the sea for 21 days
After this we made the next stop at the Cape of Good Hope which is the most South Westerly point of Africa. So now we have been to the most South point and the most South West - how exciting! We climbed a large rockface and wore safety helmets and safety harnesses and cotton wool pads on our knees (yes, I am joking mother. What did we need life jackets for when we were kayaking? We can both swim you know.. And if we had left a note saying what we doing it wouldn't have been much help because we would have probably drowned by the time they read it, if the boat had tipped over. Thanks for your email though!) The views were awesome. Look at the pictures when Tami finally gets off her bottom and puts them on the internet...
On our way to our next destination we saw a whole family of baboons who are apparently so trained that they can unlock car doors and steal carier bags of food from people. It was really sad because one of the female baboons was carrying her dead child around with her like a doll. According to Alex, our guide, the mothers often carry their dead children around for a long time before they can let go. It may well have died from natural causes but more often than not when a new male takes over as leader he kills all the newborn so that only his gene pool survives and also so he can state his authority.
Finally after a healthy and fulfulling lunch (no, really it was healthy) in the Cape of Good Hope we trekked it up to the lighthouse at Cape Point, spurning the cable car in order to strengthen our ever increasing leg muscles. (Yes Claire mine ARE bigger than yours and yes Jon mine WILL be better than yours). Again the views were absolutely magnificent. The clouds on the horizon looked like huge mountains and there was a crystal blue and aquamarine sea for miles around. There was also a fabulous telephone mast bang slap in the middle of all this which really added to the beauty of the landscape. Following the treacherous climb we then had to walk back down and embark on a 7km bike ride along the coast and through the nature reserve. It was good fun and 7 of us decided to carry on the last 6km till the end, conquoring steep hills and dodgy roads. Jon, you would be so proud because I absolutely caned it and was only beaten by a German guy who said he never really did any cycling. BULL. He blatantly was the German champion of cycling. However I did overtake once but that was only because he had stopped for water...
That exhausting bike ride was the end of tour. It was very good fun and we connected so much with Eddie that we went out to dinner with him and his friend Darren to the stone baked pizza place. We had a real laugh and ended up at the Irish Pub called the Dubliner which had live music that was brilliant. (No Dad I didn'y drink any vodka...)
So that was that.
The End.
PS Dad I am so upset about that West Ham defeat. How on earth did we lose in the 90th minute for goodness sake???
PPS Mother thank you for your concern with the life jackets.
