Down Under!
G'day mates!!!
Hope you all are doing great!!
After the 10 hour bus ride from the Whitsundays we arrived in good old Cairns! Yey! Unfortunatly we actually arrived at about 7 in the morning and we couldn't check in until about 12 so a very tired Jason collapsed on a sofa in the tv room to sleep, Rach was going to do the same but the room smelled of manky male sweat- for some reason males are immune to the aweful smell, so she went for a wander around Cairns instead. Realising that we didn't have very much money to last us until pay day- in 3 days time- she did a bit of budget food shopping then headed back but managed to get lost. Getting lost somewhere in England is one thing but getting lost in Oz is another just because of the heat, and poor Rach got lost down streets with no shade at all.
After check in we had some lunch then just lounged around by our pool - yes we had a swimming pool! And we also had a Jaccusi!! It must have been one of the best hostels we'd stayed at so far. The only down point (well there were 2 for me because of the stinky TV room, smelly males!) was when we were in our room some guys came in and searched our beds for bed bugs, aaaaaaarh! There apparently wern't any in our beds but all night I'd wake up thinking one was crawling across my face!
The next day we went exploring around the city/town it was quite characteristic with lots of white fronted buildings with random statues here and there- they had Blues Brothers statues! We didn't think that Cairns had a beach but after seeing a sign pointing to "The Beach" we thought it would be nice to go and see. We followed a sign which ended at a beach shaped expanse by the sea made of mud. Thinking maybe there was one further up the coast we asked a local and he said that this expanse of mud was all they had, if we wanted a sand beach we had to get on a bus... So we went back to the hostel and had a swim in the pool, then watched a random film about a Jew hater who actually turned out to be a Jew?!? It was quite confusing...
On our last day in Cairns we spent most of the time in the sun by the pool, it was so relaxing. We really did like Cairns because of the laid back lifestyle and the heat, we probably would have liked it more if we could have afforded to go snorkelling again or even diving.
On that evening, much to Jason's dismay had to get on another plane (Rach loves them so didn't mind!) this time to fly to Brisbane.
Well thats all that happened in Cairns, nothing much really! But we did enjoy ourselves,
Jase & Rach
