We took a boat trip to Punta Pitt at the north east tip of San Cristobal. We saw all types of boobies, for which the Galapagos is famous, Nazca boobies, red footed boobies as well as blue footed boobies. We went snorkeling round the rocks at a small island off Punta Pitt. The water was clear but cold and the current quite strong. After this we went to Kicker rock. This is a huge rock, of volcanic tuff, rising out of the ocean, the shape of which resembles a shoe, hence the name. A narrow channel separates it from another huge tuff called Leon Dormido, so named because it resembles a sleeping lion when viewed from shore. We snorkeled through the channel between the rocks. Here you may see hammerhead sharks, rays and turtles. However visibility was not very good and we only saw one small Galapagos shark. The other side of the channel where the rock face rises vertically from the sea we saw a huge green pacific turtle swimming about ten feet beneath us. After this was a well earned lunch and a walk in the sun on a nearby beach, a chance for me to thaw out after the cold water. There is however always a fly in the ointment, and here it was horse flies with a fierce bite, they even drew blood. Driven away by the flies we went back to the boat and returned to Wreck Bay by way of Isla Lobos. Here we snorkeled again in the much warmer shallow water where young sea lions played with us. It was enchanting.
We will be leaving on Tuesday the 17th, 3,100 miles at sea to the Marquesas, which will take about three weeks depending on the wind, so this will be the last update for some time.
