Heading west. Up and up and up some more...climbing up the Western Tier range was a bit of a struggle for the little car but we eventually made it. Then it was all downhill around the Great Lake before hitting a long unsealed and dusty stretch of road. Then started climbing again through the Cradle Mountain National Park, arriving at Queenstown - guess it's what all of Oz would look like if the government and mining intertests had their way! Stripped bare, burnt and left barren and yet strangely picturesque.
More winding roads lead to Strahan where we had lunch. Started to rain a little as we head north now into The Tarkine - unsealed, windy road all the way to Smithton. Couple of interesting moments fishtailing on loose gravel! Then suddenly the road ends at a river and we need to call the barge to cross at Corinna. Back on the road and we head into country that has been devasted by forest fires - mile after mile of burnt, dead and dying trees as far as the eye can see!
Just as suddenly it's into temperate rain forest for the rest of the journey into Smithton. Been a long drive but entertaining - Is it a bird? Is it a car? Is it a giant wallaby? Sometimes hard to tell, but we had a good laugh along the way and we managed not to hit anything yet either!
