Well Kununarra is stunning. Rural but not, seems like a town that everyone calls into. Lots of 4wd and campervans stopping etc.
Visited the market this morning, surprised to find unpolished diamonds at the market amongst other things. Looked at numerous shops both for tourists and indigenous. Finally bought a shirt with Kununarra upon it. Found a cool towel with mustering cattle and a range in the background. It's literally the station next to where I'm heading and apparently Diggers Rest has the contract to muster it. Ran into several people who know Roderick and Alida - from Diggers Rest , who think they are wonderful - that's reassuring.
It's 9:45am and it's reasonable to say that it's getting warm, although clearly it's the cooler time of year for them. This town Kununurra and Darwin to me felt like it's a cross between Zimbabwe and Vanuatu. The red dirt of Africa with the older style buildings, mixed with some of the tropical plants and tourist markets of Vanuatu.
Rubbish throughout the streets but a real cool feel to the place. Tried being friendly with the Aboriginal people, but they often looked the other way, or if they did respond it would appear that they got told off by there friends. Having said that Aussie's in general are friendlier here, than in Darwin - although once you got past the first hurdle with them in Darwin they were good. Sydney was worse - but in fairness I only dealt with shuttle drivers in Sydney that apparently didn't enjoy there job or people.
Just back at the hotel with the air con going. Tempted to jump in the pool but not
