Its been a while since our last update but finding internet in the Caratera Austral is sometimes a tough task. Well we travelled back into Argentina because due to the mountains and rugged terrain of patagonian Chile it is too difficult to travel through the Chilean fiords, you have to cross back into Argentina then go around. We went to Calafate to visit Perito Moreno a huge glacier that we trekked on finishing with a Jamieson wiskey on glacier ice, great! Then we moved onto el Chaltèn where we hiked up to Fitz Roy peak. A stunning mountain with lakes filled with glacier water so naturally we had to take a dip and check out the tempurature, we were not in long.
After that was the interesting but well rewarding mission of getting back into Chile. Its a ferry to the Argentinian immagration on the bank of the lago del Desierto then a 23.6 km hike (carrying all 21 and 25kgs of our backpacks) in the rian to the Chilean immagration on the other side of the island. It took about 7 hours to walk it with wet boots but at the end we found a small house with a family called Candelario Mansilla who welcomed us with hot coffee and a quick only just warm shower! We were to take the ferry to Villa Ohiggans the next day but due to bad weather it was postponed till the following day. We had a day to spare so we went fishing and Afra caught a salmon and i got .... 1 bite. (a big one thou) After lunch the father of the house seemed to be doing a bit of work around the back of the house so myself 3 swiss boys and a french guy went of ask if he needed help. We spent the rest of the day digging, picking, shovelling and wheelbarrowing his backyard to make room for some new bathrooms he wanted to put in. It seems that the trek to and from his house is getting more and more poular and the 1 toilet for all is not sufficient. We were all really happy to help out and has was stoaked with the amount of work we got done. At the same time Afra went hunting for rasberries and fruit ans with the wife they made scrumptious raspberry jam. we are still carryig a pot with us that they gave us to say thanks.
After Mansilla we went to Villa O`Higgans and onto a village called Caleta Tortel. They dont have roads or walkways the village is entirely connected by wooden walkways, platforms, stairs and bridges. is quite surreal but very beautiful.
After Tortel we went to Puerto Tranquillo to visit some marbel caves by boat and onto a town called Coyhaique. There wasnt to much there so we went straight to the island Of Chiloè where we are now. To our luch when we got here it was the weekend and there was a Fiesta de Cerzesa happening (beer festival) great!!!! So Afra and I stayed up til 3 amand sampled aprox 14 different artistian beers. not 100% on how many we had but it was a great night. Also here in Chiloè they have Curanto which is the equivalent of a Hangi. so we tried a couple of the meats and veg..... outstanding!!!
Now we are heading north to the lakes district of Chile to meet friends and enjoy some summer sun!
We hope you are all well!!
