We went looking for a grocery store this morning as we had no milk or cereal for breakfast. We found one a short distance away and bought breakfast and dinner food. After breakfast we walked towards Amsterdam. We thought of going to the Anne Frank house but it is booked out for 2 1/2 months. We continued walking and found the information centre at the train station. A poor excuse for an information centre. Very scant information. Maps of the city cost €2.5! Nothing free here. Sadly my first impressions of Amsterdam did not improve. Cigarette butts are everywhere on the street and litter is pretty bad as well. We had to be careful not to get ourselves killed crossing the roads. There is a road for cars, a road for cyclists (which scooters and small motor bikes also use) and a footpath. Everyone gives way to cyclists. And they move along very fast on their 3speed treadlies. This, together with everyone being on the wrong side of the road kept us firmly on our toes. And cyclists don't slow down for pedestrian idiots!! Tomorrow Gavin and I are hiring bikes to ride about 13kms to a windmill area. Should be interesting if we make it! No helmets here either. We paddled a boat on the canal later in the afternoon before walking home through a park. The park is well used. I am also well over the smell of cigarette smoke and marijuana. Pick pockets are also rife and we had to be extremely careful.
