Yesterday we didn't have any classes because we were facing the largest typhoon in the past decade. Jessica and I got about 3 hours of sleep before the wind woke us up. Living on the 9th floor of our apartment building made the noise even worse. We discovered that our windows don't close completely so there was a constant draft that rattled the doors and windows.
At 8am our building started to sway in the wind, which did little to calm our nerves, so we headed to the lower floors. Jessica and I had recently met an American coupling living on the 3rd floor. As it turned out there was another girl spending the night with them because she was living on the 14th floor of her apartment building and didn't want to be there during the storm. We spent the afternoon talking with them which was fun. Another couple who had just moved in came down to join us so we got to know several other English teachers.
The storm quieted down around 4pm and we were able to go out for dinner. We joined 4 of our co-workers at a Japanese restaraunt a few blocks away. Getting outside allowed us to survey the destruction which was quite impressive. We passed by shattered windows and broken trees. Many of the large signs that hang on the front of buildings had come down and we saw a fence that had been completely destroyed.
I read that the death toll from this storm is at 15 but there is another typhoon that is supposed to hit tonight so everyone is bracing for more destruction. Hopefully this one wont be as bad.
