Booked out of Monastri Guest house, what a lovely place and the lady did everything she could to make us welcome, even asked us to put in a good word for them, on their website....
Travelled up to the Monastery's in the rocks behind Meteora, these places are amazing, perched on the edge of rocks hundreds of feet high. The amount of steps involved to get up to these places was pretty tiring but well worth the effort. One of these monastery's was huge and had a great collection of historical information in a museum about the country and a lot of their wars of independence. Fascinating!
After five different Monastery's we decided to follow the road towards the top of the mountain as there were signs pointing to a restaurant that had spectacular views and we wanted a coffee. Sure enough, the view was again, nothing like we had seen before but it was a little windy and very cool. We ordered some coffee and a Greek salad which we shared and it was delicious.
It was time to head for the tiny hamlet of Delofo but our GPS didn't know of its existence! We tried several different towns that appeared nearby on our little map in the lonely planet guide but the GPS really didn't know what we were looking for. After some clever work on Liz's behalf we identified a 'nearby' place that we could head for - we had more than 3 hours driving ahead of us. Unfortunately we didn't quite get it right and ended up lost. Asking some locals who couldn't understand English didn't help much but we did learn that we were about 50km in the wrong direction....
Arriving at the large town of Ionnania (a city really) we got lost again so we finally rang our guest house and got directions from them.
Delofo is so remote that very few people have heard of it and when we travelled down the one lane road into the town it ended at a small parking area where the town started. We had to carry our luggage about 3 blocks down some very steep & rocky alleys and then up a step uneven pathway to find the entrance to the place!
It was a lot cooler up here as it is so high in the mountains and we put the heater on to warm the room. Then walked next door to the only place we could buy some dinner, which tunred out to be delicious before turning in for a welcome early night
