Sir Arthur Evans, the English Oxford don who excavated Knossos in around 1900, partially reconstructed many parts of the palace. His work has been vilified by true archaeologists, but is helpful to ordinary tourists like me because you can visualize the original so much better. Even in September, there were MANY tourists. The site organizers handle the crowds very well.
