Our Global Gallivants
This morning we went to Horseshoe Bend. This is where the Colorado River makes a 180 degree turn. It derives it's name from it's shape, which is like a horseshoe. The lookout is 1000 feet above the river! There are no railings or guard rails. There must be issues with people getting heat stroke from the short uphill walk from the parking lot to the overlook because there are signs advising 1 bottle of water per person, etc. It was an amazing sight, made all the more interesting by the 1000 foot drop over the edge. The rock formations along the cliff are beautiful in themselves, the river just adds to the action!
This afternoon we took a tour on Lake Powell to see Antelope Canyon from the water. This was also a small tour with only 11 of us on the boat. Of course this is just a canyon and not nearly as exciting as a slot canyon, but still interesting to see. This lake is the same canyon as Horseshoe Bend, but we are at the upper lip of the canyon because of the dam. The water temperature of Lake Powell at the surface is 80 (27)degrees F! I can see the attraction. The temperature midsummer was 83 (28) degrees We were maybe 50 feet from shore when the guide said the water depth was 450 feet. Lake Powell is the second largest man made reservoir in the US by water capacity. Lake Mead is larger. The reservoir has been over capacity only once. Two million people a year visit the lake. There are close to 100 canyons that are accessible from the lake. we could see striped bass in the water on our tour. The other types of fish in the lake are small mouth and largemouth bass, walleye, channel catfish, crappie and bluegill. You can also rent a houseboat there, which looked like a lot of fun.
The tour took us to the end of the canyon. Past that, there isn't any water.
when the tour was over, we had lunch at the marina, which was fun. Went back to the hotel and tried to catch up on the blog beside the pool.
