At the end of last night, I agreed with Kratos to have a lie in. We would then meet at 1pm to decide if we would go the scooter training. I woke early in the end (mainly due to our newly aquired dog barking outside for attention) and did the usual ritual of breakfast and reading. It was not long before Kratos arrived and me made the decision to learn how to ride mopeds. Our logic was if me and Kratos did the training, Sarah could ride pillion with me tomorrow. We headed off and soon arrived at the school... Leaving Sarah to have a pamper session doing her nails and dying her hair.
The teacher greeted us very professionally and talked us through the training process. It wasn't long before me and Kratos were on the back of his bike, me with a helmet that didn't fit in my head, and rode to the training area.
This area was little back roads on the south end of Pai which were thankfully very quiet. Myself and Kratos would alternate in the training process which would take 40 minutes each. The bike we were learning on was an automatic 110cc which is pretty standard for bike rental in Thailand. We first practised the throttle and brake combination with was fairly straightforward. Twist the throttle back to go and squeeze the back brake to stop, simple! Then came the daunting part of moving forward. I pulled back the throttle and was soon rolling forward and put my feet up. It is really easy to get balance, in fact easier than a push bike. The instructor ran beside me, made me stop before he jumped on the back. We did loops of the circuit, practicing braking, turning of various degrees and hill starts. We managed to get up to 30km/hour which actually feels a hell of a lot faster when you are on the bike. We finished off with a solo circuit and after that we both felt confident that tomorrow we could hit the open road. We were given the pass grades from the instructor and he kindly dropped us off back in town.
