After a very plush overnight journey (okay, so we went first class!) from Rio we arrived safely in Ouro Preto!
However...... the crazy driver drove so fast that we arrived an hour and a half ahead of schedule in a dark bus depot which the guide book states to avoid after dark...yippe!!
A very nice hostel in a great location and only a short walk to the main square where we spent most of the morning just sitting and people watching.
Ouro Preto is an old colonial town with quaint cobblestoned streets and old style shops, it was like going back in time to old style Europe.
Only 2 days here as there is not a lot in the way of sightseeing (other then people watching), so spent the second day visiting churches and museums. Ouro Preto (Black Gold) is in Minas Gerais which is famous for mining gems and gold so the museums were interesting to say the least!
In addition to the buildings the people here are very interesting to say the least. The one and only money changer was a big, smiley, cowboy hat wearing man who commandeered local respect very much like the mayor would. He was a very warm and welcoming guy who regailed us with stories of how he´d bought some dud tyres and how he always kept some emergency garlic in his pockets should his hosts not have provided any. Definitely a memorable character to the trip so far.
Relaxed out after our Rio experience and ready to face the next leg of our tour.....
