The sun is shining - a beautiful day for driving to Stavanger! Jim directed us flawlessly out of the city of Oslo while Kevin drove on a great 4 lane road. By the time Jim took over driving, the road changed to a bit of construction, hills and curves! After killing the car a few times and needing to turn around after missing the turn to Grimstad, Kevin said enough was enough and took over driving for the rest of the day!
We stopped for lunch in Grimstad - known for all of the white buildings overlooking the fjord. Very fun to explore a few shops before eating lunch. We grabbed a table at an outdoor cafe and waited to order lunch. We waited and waited and waited and were finally told by another customer that we needed to order inside! And, to top it off, we were told the food wasn't very good. So, off we went to a different restaurant and to have some delicious pizza. A two hour stop but well worth it!
The countryside was beautiful. Lots of small farms dotting the hillside. All of the barns were painted red - no peeling paint anywhere. As we moved south, the landscape became more and more hilly and rocky. Sheep were abundant and water was everywhere. We drove through many tunnels as we traveled - the longest 3.2 kilometers, some were as short as 200 meters. The landscape surpassed our expectations for this area of Norway - really beautiful views.
Stavanger is the 4th largest city in Norway. We are staying in a Bed and Breakfast. It's going to be interesting. It is pretty basic. Peter, Arin and Kayla have the triple room tonight - three twin beds and a shower and toilet down the hall. Jim and Mary Sue have two twin beds and a shower. We let Kevin and Keely have the room with the two twin beds pushed together - it's their anniversary tomorrow! Everyone thinks it's great though - gives us a taste of European travel! The best part of the day was the Norwegian waffles served at 9:00 pm!
