It is amazing how quick time goes by when we are doing... Not very much (it has not happened to us in years). In the morning, I walk along the beach (yes, white sand, coconut trees and turquoise sea) to get fresh baguettes and chocolate croissants, plus enough for lunch and diner. When I come back, Paul goes for his one hour of swimming in the lagoon. The only thing left to do then is the daily homework for Maxim and Callum and some planning for the rest of the journey... When it gets hot, we leave the beach or the pool to nap in our comfy room. In the evening, after yet another spectacular sunset and a homecooked diner, we go for a crepe at the 'roulotte' on the beach. A 'roulotte' is a kitchen on wheel. They pop up all over the island from 5:00 pm on and offer huge portion of delicious food at Perth food court prices, with tables set under the coconut trees. We are hooked on 'poisson cru tahitien' raw fresh tuna fish with lime juice, coconut milk, carrots and cucumbers....yum...
Tahiti is an independant country under the hegemony of France, giving its citizen the right to live and work in France. Some dream of true independance. It has worried potentiel investors. This together with the world credit crunch has put the island in a crisis. What is the point of paying no taxes (did you say eden) if the cost of life continue to climb and the commercial opportunities continue to decline... With no taxes, the services are reduced to the strict minimum...yet the tahitians are getting on with life without fuss, a flower in their hair, a new tatoo on their tanned bodies and time, always time for a chat...
We had the great privilege of being invited by our precious friends to a family lunch last Friday... A long table by the pool overlooking the pacific ocean, beautiful food, funny banter and all the time in the world...we will see them again in the capital Papetee on Saturday before sailing to the island of Moorea for a few days of yet more relaxation. Next week on Thursday we will fly back to Aukland and then to Los Angeles and Disneyland. That will be such a contrast to here...
