Time for another tour! This time a 3 day 2 night tour of the sights and delights of Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory. Apparently the NP is half the size of Switzerland and is the largest in Australia. We will cover 900kms over the next 3 days. We are travelling in a Toyota Landcruiser which is a bit different as there are 2 benches facing each other that we sit on in the back. It feels a more personal tour though and I have chosen to travel with a locally owned and operated company - Kakadu Dreams. There are 9 of us plus Brad our guide who is great fun and really informative (and good eye candy). On our way into the park we went on a jumping crocodile cruise on the Adelaide river where we saw Saltwater crocs (the ones that eat you) jump out of the water to get buffalo meat which was hanging from the boat. Kakadu has salties everywhere so you have to go really careful where you swim. We also saw some Kites swooping down really low. We continued our journey deep into the NP until we reached the most northerly part accessible by vehicle, known as Ubirr. It is a protected Aboriginal artsite and we saw lots of interesting artwork on the rocks in ochre paint which is thousands of years old. Aboriginals don't have a written language and so they used to pass down stories and directions via artwork. At the top of the escarpment (Ubirr) we soaked in the stunning 360 degree views of the NP and Arnhem land (Aboriginal owned land where 'white fellas' are not allowed to go without permission from the tribe. It was beautiful and green. Some scenes from Crocodile Dundee were filmed here. Our next stop was at another artsite known as Norgaline rock. We saw similar art and what was thought to be a birthing cave with art of women having babies which naturally attracted my attention. On our way to our camp we stopped at Yellow Water Billabong to watch a beautiful sunset which reflected on the water of the billabong. Our bush camp has toilets and showers and we lit a fire and cooked veg and potatoes, some buffalo sausages and lamb chops. It was a delicious meal cooked traditionally on the hot coals. It's been a busy day but lots of fun and the group dynamics are really good. I'm looking forward to seeing what the next 2 days bring.
