Champasak - another highlight of Laos (are they all highlights?!) Riverside village, hammocks at sunset and more bike adventures!! A 20km round trip to Wat Phou, the only Khmer ruins outside of Cambodia, and a national heritage site. Unrelenting burning sun wit no shade to hide in pouring with sweat and severly dehydrated we arried at the delapidated ruins of the once grandiose temple. many, many steps later we arrived at the top, with an impressive view of the mekong, the rice paddies and palm trees. The village itself is so charming with lots of grubby little kids jumping on the back of our bikes as we rode along! We spend days riding up and down meeting kids, buffalos and goats! Some of the kids were so excited to have their picture taken (with their pet monkey sporting a tshirt and beads!!?) one of them was involuntarily dancing with delight the whole time we were there! We chartered a boat for the day and explored the river island opposite - It has the most gorgeous pristine white sandy beaches on which we sat watching the buffalos having their evening bath in the river and watched the sunset. Discovered some hidden khmer ruins in the woodland down a hidden stream and watched the monks dozing in the sun in the old temples. saw (or rather heard) our first signs of Communism, the radio in 5the village lasted through megaspeakers thorughout the village tree times a day incredibly loudly, and none of the locals dared to challenge this, its a shame in such an idyllic village what they listen to is dictated to them. we have been to many more places and have so many stories to share but as we have been out of civilisation for almost a month it would take me too long to catch up! Vientiane, Pakxe and Savvanakhet will have to wait for another time!
