16th July-
Interesting breakfast of pear and coco pops... They were going for free in the kitchen so I thought why not give these try. Stopped at the supernova mall in zadar before driving to Slovenia. Thought about driving along the coast but thought it would take longer due to windy coastal roads and reduced speeds. The tollway was the best choice and after 3 and bit hours of driving I crossed the boarder into Slovenia. The road and scenery changed instantly. The roads became narrow and the forest was think on both sides. The temperature had also dropped from about 30 in Croatia to low 20s. Drove for nearly another hour towards the Skocjan caves following the google maps. It was all going well till the directions wanted me to turn down a tiny dirt forest track... That couldn't be right so went back out onto the main road and drive around and then found a sign to get to the caves from the other side. I think google wanted me to drive into the cave rather then the carpark for the guided tours. Made it just in time to join the last tour of the day. In my made rush to get there I was dressed in singlet and thongs... Not ideal for walking around caves. Walked with the guide down to the cave entrance then broke into the English speaking tour group and entered. We walked a quick pace through the caves. They were good. Some large columns have formed and the underground river was a highlight. There was also an area called the great hall which was a very large open area full of beautiful formations. When the tour finished you had the choice of the quick way back or Long way via a waterfall. Chose the long way back and enjoyed a nice walk through some woodlands and got close to a waterfall formed when the underground river come above ground again. Once back at the car I decided to take the scenic route to postojna. It took just under an hour but was a great drive through the small rural roads with great scenery. Once in postojna was able to get a dorm room at the hostel but this place is really quiet so I have a 10 bed dorm and bathroom all too myself :) the temp is cool but walked out around the town looking for a place to eat. Found the main square and there were a few restaurants there... But the most popular place by far was the small kebab shop. All there tables were full. Kept walking to see what Elsa I could find but come back to the kebab shop as it seemed to be the only place with customers. Limited English is spoken but managed to order a wrap and it was delicious. Walked around a little more and then back to the hostel. I noticed the rollerblading is still really popular here. Mum dad and kids are all out together enjoying the summer evening. Quiet night as I am tired after such a long day driving.
