3rd July 2013- up at 5:30 am and then in the taxi to the airport at 6am. It took only an hour over just under to get to the airport and then checked in. Flight went to cuzco and then to puerto Maldonado. We were able to see some amazing views of the rivers and the colours of the jungle. Once at the airport we were hit with the hot humid weather, after the cool and smog of Lima it was quiet a change. We transferred onto the Eco amazonion lodge bus and drive the ten minutes into the small town and the office of the lodge. We were able to connect for out last wifi and phone service. We left our main bag at the office and then just took the overnight bag and walk down to the river edge and took a canoe downstream for 1.5 hours to the lodge. Was an interesting boat ride as the canoe is fairly unstable so it rocks and tips around in the water a lot. We disembarked at the lodge it was like a tropical paradise. We were greeted with our welcome cocktails and shown to our bungalows. They are nice with screens on one side and a double door to stop the bugs entering. There is no hot water and only have electricity between 5:30 pm and 10pm.
We were served lunch of chicken and rice that had been steamed in banana leaves. Then time for a quick rest before heading out 3pm to monkey island. This involved a short canoe ride. The island had 4 main breeds of monkeys and we walked for a couple hours through the jungle keeping our eyes open for them. We saw large black spider monkeys, the brown and white cappuccino monkey of all different sizes, there were some squirrel monkeys and a small tamilar was also climbing around the trees. It was then back on the canoe to the lodge for some free time and a swim in the pool before dinner at 7pm. After dinner we went out on the canoe again looking for caimans. A small crocodile creature. It was incredible to be out on the river in the canoe with no sound or light, you could see the stars like never before they were so bright and vibrant and it just was so surreal. I haven't seen the southern cross since leaving Australia so was great to see it again and also spotted a shooting star. After 20 or so we turned on the boat engine and spotlight and moved closer to the bank in search of the animals. We were able to see several in and out of the water. They are a small animal maybe a 1 meter or so long. It was then back to the lodge for a cold shower, there is no hot water and in bed before 10pm as that is when the electricity is turned off.
