7th June 2013- last day in Cuba. Spoke with one of the other girls in my dorm and she has friend heading to the airport this afternoon so walked over to the Casa he was staying at and we can share a taxi to the airport at 1pm, which is a little early for me but I don't have enough money left for a taxi on my own so will just head out there early I guess. Walked in to the old town for a last look around. Brought a street pizza for breakfast, not ideal breakfast drops but it only cost 50cents so the price was right. It is full sun and hot today. Headed back to the hostel to look up the address and name of the street coveted in art. Stopped to buy a mango for lunch on the way. Walked over the callejon de hamel which is this small side street that is covered in art and recycled art. It was just this maze of colour and maddness. It was great and then a local started showing me along the street pointing out different pictures an what they mean and how bathtubs have become seats and nuts and bolts into a lantern. This has all be done one artist Salvador Gonzalez and as I reached the end of street he was walking along so got to meet him! It started as just decorating his house to reflect the African heritage of some of the Cuban people and then it spread out onto the street and buildings around the street. It was fantastic. Looked through the gallery also but wasnt as impressed with the art as what I saw out on the street. It was just so fun and happy and free with all the momvement, colour and texture. Kinda like Cuba itself I guess. Walked back to hostel to shower and pack ready to head to the airport. Ate the whole mango to myself for lunch and it was so tasty... Juice was running down my hands and face but it's flavor was amazing. I have forgotten how great it is to eat fresh fruit after spending the winter in Canada where it is all picked early and imported. Showered and packed my bag. Walked over to the other Casa to meet for the taxi ride to the airport. Walk didn't take very long so headed out and found a sandwich place so ordered a hamburger, but it was raw and cold in the middle still so decided not to eat that. Taxi to airport, driver had to make a toilet stop along the way on the side of the road. Was there with plenty time checked in, was question by the check in desk why I had a ticket into Columbia but no ticket out, managed to explain that I was taking a bus out and she seem happy with that. Then i had to give emergency contact details for the flight check in, I have never been asked for that at check in before... This has all made me a bit nervous. paid the departure tax and then just wasted time looking around the airport. It is really hot inside the building. No stamp on my passport when leaving also which is good for traveling back through the states. caught a bus out onto the tarmactic and talked with some other Aussies heading to Peru, but had traveled in Columbia so had a couple little tips. It is amazing how everywhere u travel nearly always find another Aussie. Flight was full and they kept clapping at random announcements the captain made, they were in Spanish so I had no idea what they were about. Arrived and managed to collect my bag and then change some money. Walk looking for the taxi booking desk but couldn't see it to joined the line infront of the authorized taxi sign. Managed to find a lady that had lived in sydney so spoke some English and she helped me get a taxi to the hostel. Didn't have a booking but the hostel had a room and was grateful to have Internet again.
