May 15th,
Breakfast at the hotel before heading out for a walk around Bucharest. The museums were closed again today so had to find other things to look. Shop sort of open at 10am but many are not really for business till after that. Walked around to the revolution square monument and was scared that I wasn't meant to be taking pictures as I could hear a whistle blowing. Turns out it was just the homeless drunk having some fun.
Walked towards the university district and and looked in a few shops and then wound my way around to the boulevard that lead towards the parliament. The walk down that street was again showing the opulence of the building the entry way that he tried to create with dozen of fountains and lights. The building in that street are also from the late 1980 as the ones that were there were destroyed to create the grand ave.
Walked back to the hotel and checked out before catching the metro to the train station. Got the wrong line but was able to change with easy and arrived at the train station having to head straight onto the train to Bulgaria.
The train ride was slow and we had stop at the boarder before leaving Romania and then stopped again when entering Bulgaria. The boarder between the two countries is the Danube river and crossing it was a sight. It was so wide and enormous and moving rapidly. Had a great view over it from the train.
We had to change trains at a small town about 45 mins out of Valiko Tarnovo. This involved walking our luggage across the tracks. It had stopped raining at this stage so we didn't get wet but the driver of the train we were about to get on was laughing at us out if his window as we walked across the tracks. The train was just the engine and a single carriage. Looked very cute.
On arrival into Veliko Tarnovo it had started to rain again. Taxis were tried to be organized but there are 11 people all with large bags and only one small taxis. After some talk four of us crammed into the taxi we has suitcases and bags packed in on to of us. You just has to laugh. The driver was very rude, overall most people have not been welcoming. The driver wouldn't take us to the hotel as he said the road was to uneven to drive up. We were able to walk up it wheeling our bags though.
Went for a walk down towards the gorge for dinner. The restaurant was nice and had a view out over the gorge. The food was really good. Had sach a dish served on a hot stone with grilled chicken and corn with pickles and cheese.
