Hello!
Well the last few days seem to merge into one as I have spent an enormous amount of time on a buses travelling all over the place!
After a very hot and sunny Easter by the beach we went back to Zomba to finish packing and say goodbye to our neighbours and all of the locals who we have come to know very well!
It was very very strange packing up all my stuff and leaving my home for the last 3 months! Everyone was very sorry to see us leave, and some of the locals sang us some songs which was amazing!
We then travelled up the country to the capital Lilongwe to spend the night there in a lodge called Mabuya lodge. It took about 6 hours on an african minibus called a Matola which would never be allowed on the roads in England but here they are the quickest form of transport! It was very very tiring!
We then got up very early again the next morning and got on another bus which took 8 hours up to Mzuzu then on to Nahaka bay by the lake where we were hoping to do a PADI diving course...more on that later!
The buses here are so funny, they refuse to leave the depot until they're completely full and will take anyone or should I say anything...chickens included! Everytime you stop everyone swamps the bus trying to sell you bread rolls, drinks, phone credit, samosas (bit like cornish pasties) etc. Can be quite annoying but you can just close the window and they get the message!
Unfortunately our plan to do the PADI course never happened because I was diagnoised with a chest infection on sunday and therefore not allowed to go deeper than 4 metres. As I am very prone to these I knew it was coming and now am taking Amoxocillin which is fine and I'm getting better!
So instead we headed back to Lilongwe then on to Zambia with about 20 other AV's. There is a direct bus from Lilongwe to Lusaka which leaves at 6am, so we got up at about 4:15 and then sat on this bus for 13 hours!!!!! It was still good fun though. Luckily we got there early so we got seats but some of the Malawians were standing in the aisle. We arrived at about 7 in the evening and was completely amazed to see how developed Lusaka is in comparision to Malawi. I can now see why people say coming home is more of a culture shock than coming out here! It was halirious we were all just staring out the window, opened mouthed at a road which actually had lines on it and cars with both headlights working.
We are going to look around Lusaka today and then tomorrow head for Livingstone and a backpackers lodge called Jollyboys which we have booked ourselves into!
Will keep you all posted!
Bye xxxx
