What a fantastic place. the sunset exemplifies the colours in the rocks that face the sun. Even though the road was really crappy to Windjarna George the Gibb River Rd wasn't so bad. We walked up through the george with the 'freshwater' crocodiles - a creature who has the ability to make your mind boggle as the awesomeness of their being is seen up close- enough and personal. they are a peaceful animal who are happy to have humans in their life so long as they are treted with respect. we walked deep into the george along the sandy and winding track. The historical wounds of past flood levels can only be described as over shadowing compared to our heights. It would be fair to say that the height above our heads would have been another metre, making the expanse of total surface water that stretches from one side to another approximately 40-50m wide. A colossal amount of water in one hit. Following our sunset walk at the george, the next day we headed to Tunnel Creek. after bout an hour or so on the super degraded road we arrived to the Leopold ranges hosting the tunnel which was some 750m long. It was also home to an aboriginal named Jindamurra, who met his death at the hand of a white mans rifle out the frontof the tunnel. The history of the area is rich in the destruction of indigenous individuals and whole communities, for what appears to be bluntly the economic growth of the white person, owning land and raising stock. Some places even have a very sombre and extreemly sad feeling about them. To read the histories and understand the white Australian at the time was happy to execute groups of indigenous people in expeditions is truly horiffic. On a Happier and lighter note, The Tunnel was a hiding refuge for Jindamurra from the local authoritiesfor several years before he came to his demise. The tunnel and it's surrounds hosts many artworks of Jindamurra's. These are more commonly know as the "Bradshaw" paintings. The irony in this title is that the name Bradshaw is the surname of white person who 'discovered' these artworks. It would be very interesting today to have a singer named after the person who signed them up!!! None the less the tunnel was an adventure. Walking through pitch black cool air, with water at our feet, and only a couple of torches to light our way -the experience was well worth it. We were however very cautious of the resident coc who apparently lived in there too.
