This next installment comes from the small student town of Oxford MS. It is said to have gained it's name from the similarities it has with the slightly more famous Oxford of the homeland. Having seen it, and not to take away from the peaceful and in parts beautiful surroundings, it bares very little resemblance to the City of Dreaming Spires.
The main purpose of this stopping point was to see some friends and have a little time off the road. So that we did.
The first night Jensen and I attempted the County Line Beer Challenge. This exists due to Oxford County being a semi-dry county. A true dry county is one in which the purchase of alcohol is prohibited. Oxford allowed the purchase of un-refrigerated beer, along with some other restrictions that I do not recall. So back to the challenge. The consumption of 6 small beers (totalling 42 fl.oz.) was required by each participant from the time they leave the car park of the liquor store in the next county, to when the Oxofrd county line was reached (an 8 and a half minute drive by our estimations). Being the competitor that I am, I completed said challenge in a little over 4 minutes, leaving me bloated and slightly tipsy.
Note: it is legal in the state of Mississippi for a person of legal drinking age or above to be drinking an alcoholic beverage while operating a vehicle on a public road, so long as they are not beyond the legal blood alcohol level......CRAZY. We had a sober driver just so you know.
The rest of the evening comprised further consumption of wine and various spirits. The night culminated in me challenging an American to a drinking contest, and loosing. I had already had plenty, AND, the cheating Yank was having lower volume shots and diet coke, while was apparently drinking something called 155.
Anyway, the next day was not pleasant for my head, and I welcomed the afternoon nap.
The next evening we went for dinner. I had some authentic Southern fried catfish and sweet-tea (I mean really sweet). Also, I got to drive my friend's Mustang GT, which struck a chord with the motorhead inside me. Of course it cornered like a boat, and the automatic transmission reacted no faster than a sloth, but it was fun nonetheless.
That concludes this small part of the road trip. It was great to see some old friends, and get off the road for a while.
Next stop Memphis.
p.s. if you hadn't noticed, each blog post as a directly corresponding photo album, fyi.
