Oh my god! I am in so much pain! Really wasn't the brightest idea I've had to start off my hiking experience with I quote 'challenging 18km hike' but it was the Tongariro Crossing where Mt Doom from Lord of the Rings is located so it was worth it, and I did make it in the end after taking it at my own pace. I very early told Jo to go on ahead as she wanted to tackle Mt Doom summit as well, and it was very clear early on that there was no way I'd be doing that! It turns out that Jo not only did that summit but also Mt Tongariro summit too and STILL managed to get back 45 mins after me as she ran... yes ran the last half of hike... she is a machine Anyway, we were both really glad of the mineral pools and spa at our campsite to relax in after and we were fast asleep but 9pm at the lastest!lol
Anyway, I've jumped ahead of myself... before the biggest physical challenge of my life, the previous dayJO and I went White Water Rafting on the Tongariro River... now this was so muich fun and beat black water rafting hands down if you ask me! Jo and I were by far the youngest 2 people on our trip so we immediately won the favour of the 3 guides (one being particularly hot who is from NEw Plymouth where Jo lives!). We got put at the front of one of the rafts, the wettest and and scariest place to be, but after about the 3rd rapid we were loving it! The trip lasted for ages and the sights were absolutely stunning. Halfway through we stopped and walked up this stream where we came to a waterfall, the idea was to climb up and do a waterfall jump...I actually suprised myself by doing it.... practice for next week's bungee I guess! I came away from rafting addicted and wanting to do a grade 4 river (this one was grade 3) so on my return to Australia if anyone knows of a grade 4 river near us let me know!
So here I now am in Wellington City YHA, a very nice YHA at that, I even have an en-suite! Have no energy at all to do anything today and still very stiff and sunburnt so I am doing some washing and getting an early night. I leave at 7.15am in the morning to get the ferry to south island and I am going on a nice wine tour tomorrow afternoon to help me recover ready for a full day of sea kayaking on tuesday, when hopefully I will have my energy back...
