Hi Guys,
What a mad couple of days I have had! Those of you who read the ;ast blog will know that I went away to the great ocean road this weekend adn it was absolutly fab!
Not only the road, but the Great Ocean Road is home to the twelve aposals. For those of you who dont know or have never heard of them- they are basicly massive limestone rock formations in the sea that started off as part of the coast but have been worn away over the years by the sea and made into these fab rocks formations (made from limestone/ dead animals/ sandstoner and general crap from the sea) and here us a little fact for you- they are actually only NINE apolsals which I didnt know until I got there (did my research and it didnt mention that anywhere!) apparently there started off with a few more and they have collapsed over time, but they kept the name as the 12 aposals as appreantly it is a good tourist name- even though there was never actually 12 in the first place! But hey whatever, they were amazing! (for rocks!)
The Great Ocean Road is the craziest road ever- you are litrally going down the windy road which is right on the edge of the coast- which as you can imagine can be a little scary at times! Apparently becuase so many people died they put one of those metal things at the edge but that was ony 15 years ago can you believe! The road was built by ex-serviceman from the war who couldnt get jobs, and the whole thing was made by hand and took 14 years to make!!
Along the way down the road we stopped at various locations such as Shipwreck coast (all the ship-wrecks were under the water) as well and a place called Loch & Gorge. This area is called this because there was a shipwreck there years ago and of the the fifty-one passengers and crew, only two survived: Tom Pearce and Eva Charmicheal. They were stuck in there as there seemed to be no way out but Tom managed to climb out and go and get help and save Evas life, so he was a hero.
After we went to a rainforrest which was up a moutain- that was ok. A tree is a tree innit.....
Anyway, we got to our accomodation quite early, which was a cute little house in a place called Appollo Bay. I met some nice people on the trip-Kim (from Malaysia and O- Ray-kkkkkkkkkkk or something but I spent the weekend calling him Frenchie! (incase you havent guessed- he was french!) so we were all playing pool for a while - it was England v France and I am sorry to tell my fellow Pommy's that I did not come through for you! I won one out of three games so nearly but not quite! However Frenchie was making his best efforts to put me off by dancing around and messing around so some could call that cheating- but apprently not! So then I had MY FIRST AUSSIE BBQ since I have been here which was Yuuuuuuuuuuummy!! Afterwards the drink was going down well, so we ran out.....but dont worry because there was a bar just down the road where we spent the rest of the evening! Watchin the Australian football (Dad- they hold the ball in thier hands and kick it- you were right!)
So when we got up at 6.30am the next morning as you can imagine we were not feeling wonderful but off we went! We finished travelling the great ocean road and made our way to a few other spots, liek London Bridge. This is another rock formation which as you can see from the pics- looks like a bridge. Back in 1990 you could actually walk onto it as it was connected to the land but one day when a couple were alking accross the whole thing collapsed and they were stuck in the island (apparently when they were rescued they would not have any pictures taken or do any interviews on what had happened which was strange as it was a major historical event but it turns out when they got stuck on th island, they didnt want anyone to see them as they were not maaired to each other!
After we went on the ferry to Phillip island and made opur way to see the Koalas and kangaroo's close up! Was great to see the Koalas so close up- but you cant touch them here in Victoria. Up in NSW and Queensland you can as they are smaller and not as dangerous but here in Victoria they are twice the size and more vicious therefore it is actually illegal to touch a Koala (unless you are a zoo keeper). Apparently the name Koala come from the aboriginal word 'no water' as Koalas will very rarely drink water as they get all the nutrition they need form the Eucalyptus trees they eat, well i say that but there is not a lot of nutrition in the so Koalas dont have much energy and as a result spend 20 hours a day sleeping! We were actually lucky to catch them why they were awake! As you will see form the pictures I also feed a Wallaby and a kangaroo! well actually several kangaroo's and also got a close up look and a stroke of a mummy with a Joey in the pouch! So that was really nice to be able to do all that!
Saying that no long after I was actally eating Kangaroo and also tried crocodile- which was rather odd but nice i guess! I had a kangaroo and crocodile flavoured pizza! how funny!!
Anyway, aftyer that (yes all on the same day!) we went down the 'the nobbies' which is a collection or rocks just off of Phillip Island where fur seals live- not very exciting I must say. We then went to the Penguin Parade, which is when all the 'little penguins (used to be known as fairy penguins) come out from the sea after darks- in the hundreds and thousands and run up the beach as fast as they can to find thier burrows. That was a pretty cool sight as they were coming out in grouyps- some of 10, some of 30 and just running up the beach- so funny! You could also watch them all waddling to thier burrows and stuff. Doesnt sound very exciting but you kind of have to be there to see how amazing it is to appreciate it! So thats was really cool- afterwards we headed back to Melbourne, I had all the good intentions of going to bed as it had been such a long weekend but Chris and Serenity were in the bar.....lets just leave it at that.
Speak to you all soon anyway, lots of love xxxx
