Well we've conquered Washington D.C, we walked all around the Capitol yesterday. We got up quite early, as there were people in the hostel getting up and it was a bit noisy.
We set off around the Capitol at about 10am and looked around all the government buildings. From the Capitol Building we walked up the Mall to see the Washington Monument, and the relecting pool, then went across to see the Lincoln Memorial. This is where the protests about the Vietnam war were held. You'll remember a scene in Forrest Gump where Forrest takes the microphne and then Jenny jumps into the relecting pool and runs towards him.
After this we walked over to Arlington Cemetery, this is where JFK and his family are buried but also it is the famous cemetery where all the war people are buried. There are thousands of white headstones (quite upsetting actually). We then jumped on the Metro and went to see the War Memorial (famous statue of army soldiers sticking the American flag into the ground). We then went onto the Metro again to go and see the White House.
We were not that impressed with the White House Building, you can't actually get that close to it and it is very small. There are Police and armed guards everywhere though!
This took us all of yesterday so we are finished in Washington now, the buildings are impressive and all the roads and sidewalks are huge, but there isn't much else to see unless you really like museums, because there's loads of them all on the American history and the American Civil War etc etc, and we're not museum people, so onward we will go!
Have booked our Greyhound to go to Philadelphia this leaves at 9am today and we should get in Philly for about 12noon, we will then stay with Ant's family till the weekend.
