Saturday 18 June - sometimes in life what you need is a little inspiration... Woke to a cloudy and misty day with plans to avoid the car and perhaps take a boat trip to spot puffins and whales. Poor weather had put off people from wanting to go out to sea so the whale spotting trip was cancelled due to lack of interest (as far as we could tell they were fed up with telling a constant stream of people that there was no interest in the trip, but there we are...). Wondering what to do with the day we wandered into a photo galley and drew inspiration from a couple of great photos taken in thick fog (a not unusual meteorological occurrence in Bar Harbor apparently) and spent a great day watching the fog come and go and change the face of the harbour.
Eventually sailed out on the 'friendship' (so called because they were made in the town of the same name rather than them having a particularly welcoming disposition) sloop Chrissy. She was built around 1910 as a lobster boat but now runs two hour trips all under sail around Frenchman bay; owned and skippered by the delightful Captain Ed (who winters in Antarctica to avoid the harsh New England weather!).
Fabulous (or should that be awesome?) meal at Bay Hotel overlooking the Harbour rounded off a really pleasant stay in Bar Harbor.
Phrase of the day "I'll take the apple juice" - an order from a four year old at the restaurant, parroting his Father's style; often substituted for "can I get a..."
