28 June - ah the delights of a Californian Summer - soup in front of an open fire to warm ourselves after the heaviest June rainfall since 1979! Total consternation from the locals that it should rain in Summer. Sat in the car looking out across the Pacific as the rain lashed against the windscreen made us feel truly at home - just like August in Wales/Scotland/Devon...
The 17 mile drive around the peninsula between Carmel and Monterrey was opened up in the 1860s and now passes the elite golfing centres of Pebble Beach (nice hot chocolate in the clubhouse - complete with club shaped stirrer) and Cypress Woods (decent lunch in the 'sticks' restaurant - you'd get thrown out of a golf club in England for calling the implements sticks!). Speaking of being thrown out, a reminder of the relative lack of elitism in America is that we could walk up to the first tee at Pebble Beach totally unhindered and sit in the club house cafe in shorts - certainly not welcomed at Wentworth!
Phrase of the day - wow, you're really bookin' it - meaning: gosh you're walking faster than us!
