Bariloche (4 May)
I got off the bus in Bariloche in Patagonia and it was cold and raining. Great! Thought I may as well be in England. Bariloche is in the lake district so the views are supposed to be pretty beautiful, but because of the rain clouds I wasn't actually able to see them. It wasn't you're typical Latin American town town with wooden buildings, St Bernards dogs and lots of chocolate shops. Think there must have been a big influx of Swiss immigrants. Because of the s***ty weather I ended up spending the evening drinking at the hostel bar with some American girls. Stayed there until the bar closed at midnight, and even pleaded with the barman, in both English and Spanish, to keep serving after closing. That was a bit embarassing. When I went in the next day, it was like walking into Ego as the barman went straight to the fridge and got a beer before I had ordered.
I had booked to do an island tour the next day. I wasn't entirely sure what it was, but it was the only tour running due to the weather. I got picked up by the coach and discovered that the guide didn't speak English and everyone else on the tour was an Argentinian pensioner. Not ideal! The tour was a boat trip to a couple of islands on the lake, but it was still raining, the lunch was s***, I didn't understand a great deal of what was going on and felt pretty rough. All in all it was a pretty gash day. I met some English guys at dinner, one of whom challenged one of the American girls to a drinking contest. Not possessing any will-power I got involved, and was drinking again, even though I was planning a sober day. Numerous beers and shots were consumed and we ended up going to another after the hostel one had closed. It was a bit of a messy night. It also snowed that night, something I hadn't expected to encounter on this trip.
I was supposed to be picked up to go zip-lining at 9 the next morning, and have checked-out before leaving. At 9.30 I was woken by banging on the dorm door. f***! I rammed all my s*** in my bag, apologised profusely, checked out and left for ziplining rather late. I went out to some woods to do the ziplining, it wasn't particularly high or long but it was something to do. After I got back to the hostel I went out for a pretty tasty steak, and headed for the bus station and Buenos Aires.
