Just back from a 6 day trek up Roraima - a "tepuis" in SE Venezuela. For the ignorant amongst you (and this included us until about 2 weeks ago), a tepuis is basically a flat-topped mountain, made famous in the book "The Lost World" for still having lots of killer dinosaurs on top of them.
Fortunately, there were no encounters with pterodactyls for us, but it was a blooming hard trip - through wind and rain, boiling sun and bitter cold carrying all our gear with us over very tough and slippery terrain (well - we did have porters to carry the food (and the toilet!!!) , but it was still tough!). The climb is pretty much vertical once you are past base camp so very tough on the thighs - both on the way up and the way down!
Very rewarding though, and our legs are really feeling it today!Hopefully you´ll be able to get an idea from the photos of what a weird environment it is once you get onto the top - as Sting would sing, it was like "walking on the moon". Amongst the stand out features of the landscape are the thousands of crystals form there naturally, plus because of the way the tepuis have developed over time, over 50% of the flora and fauna are unique to the tepuis (including miniature black frogs that couldn't hop but only crawl - lazy little gits!)
Off next to Merida for a bit of R&R - although as it`s the adventure sport capital of Venezuela, maybe not too much!
Hope you are all well and not getting blown away by the British wind
