Preface...
Tatenhill, UK
Norway has a funny reputation, for whilst the majority of people seem able to recognise that it is a land of unparalleled beauty they appear forever reluctant to visit it. Perhaps they think it is too cold - which is largely an unfair judgment in comparison to the UK, or maybe they think it is all too expensive - which is granted a slightly more weighty argument, but with a little planning a holiday in Norway can be amazingly low-cost; it has some of lowest air-fares from Britain, wild camping is legal throughout the country, so accommodation is free, and forget having to budget for extra activities for Norway's best tourist attractions, namely its endless natural wonders, are all without any cost to the visitor. And it is partially because of the aforementioned that I seem curiously addicted to this part of the world, and so it is I am once again off to acquaint myself further with the country travelling up from Oslo over the much celebrated Bergensbanen (Bergen Railway) to the city from which the railway takes its name, the city that lauds itself as not only 'the gateway to the fjords' but also 'the city with the small town feel.'
