It is time for a holiday in the middle of our holiday. Huacachina, sand dunes and the sun!
Huacachina is near Ica in the coastal area of Peru. The place is famous for its lagoon in the middle of a desert. The name didn't say anything to me at first, but after reading Lonely Planet I understood that we made a quick visit there during the last trip. Huacachina is a really small place. Everything is around the lagoon and the place is walked around in 15 minutes. It is a place for tourists and locals to come and spend some time enjoying the warm weather and the sun.
We arrived in Huacachina in the morning, so we practically had two full days there. It was really cloudy in the morning, but everyone said that the sun is going to shine at 12 and that's what happened. There is not much to do in Huacachina. They have some activities and longer trips, but we decided to concentrate on sand boarding. Usually they offer really bad boards that are too thick and in a really bad condition. We wanted to do something else and took the real snowboard.
Sand boarding was a lot of fun. Maiju has been snowboarding for years so it was much easier for her, but even I was able to go down the hill without falling all the time and even make some turns. I will definitely go to learn snowboarding next winter! The only not-so-fun thing in sand boarding is climbing the hill every time. When the temperature is close to 30 degrees and the sun is shining it is quite hard to walk up the hill. After two or three times we changed and the other one had to have a break.
During out stay we ate well, enjoyed the sun and rented a paddle boat. During the first day the whole place was full of people but on Monday it got quieter. We were really taking it easy and relaxing, great!
Funny things that happened again were when we were sitting on a bench close to our hostel people were taking photos of us once again. Without any warning some lady came next to me and put her small boy child on my lap and asked to take a photo. She was much nicer than many people earlier so we agreed to be in the photo with the boy. His name was Paolo and he was really cute, haha. Not long after that there came three girls that all wanted to take a photo with us. People around us also started laughing when that many people were going around us all the time.
One event that I also have to mention is the meeting of the only finnish people on the whole trip. About 45 year old woman came to same bathroom with us. We were about to take a shower and she was visiting the restaurant with her son. I have never imagined how hard it is to speak finnish after a long time. Yes, we do speak finnish with Maiju, but that is totally different. I had huge problems in finding the right words and trying to talk something that makes sense. We'll see if she is going to be the only one from Finland we will meet. Exciting!
Nice sunny and sandy days. I can tell that every day we spent in Huacachina we were totally full of sand. It was absolutely everywhere, haha. Maybe in Finland we get rid of it.. or not.
