Arrive Sihanoukville - Cambodia
After travelling all day we finally arrive at 7pm, as usual in the middle of know where and no clue as to where we were!! Hurds of tuk tuk drivers waiting to take us to where ever we wanted to go. We was told by Lyn and Adey to head to "Monkey Republic" a well known guest house and high up on the lonely planet guide book. So we collect our bags and jump into a tuk tuk telling the driver to take us there. The driver said "no really bad, not nice" From past experiences RAT was not going to listen as most times they say it so they can take you where they want to take you so they get commission. We was adament we wanted to go to Monkey Republic, so we arrive: Very busy, the bar was lively and was situated in the centre of town - result!! The place was run by two english guys who came out to Cambodia several years ago and set up there own bar/restaurant/guesthouse. We checked in and was taken to our room, only a 2 second walk away from the bar, not so great when sleep is needed!! Room was ok, not the best but will do. Was a little dark, navy blue bedding sheets and pillow cases ummm... now thinking about it, there is a reason behind that... What can you expect for 7$ a night. RAT dumps there bags and heads back to the bar for a bite to eat and to claim there free home brewed beer. Chilled out for the evening and headed to bed around 1am. The music was still playing, so was not easy to sleep!! A quick check of the bedding before getting our heads down, yep the coast looks clear. In no time at all R is fast asleep however, T very iritable, scratching around, itching, tossing and turning in bed. On comes the light at 3am and no word of a lie OMG bed bugs covering the bed sheets, in between the creases of the pillow case. T shakes her head and outcomes more bugs falling to the floor. What to do now, its nearly 4am on seperate single beds so the only option was for T to share with R. Top and tailed, T refused to go back to her bed, sleeping liner out and all tucked up so nothing was getting in. The worst night. Aparently bed bugs only come out at darkness, so be careful!! This resulted in T being ill and spent the next day in bed.
Early check out, as soon as RAT possibly could. What to do... we flag down a tuk tuk and asked the driver to take us to a nice guest house that dosn't have bed bugs. Funnily enough RAT forget to mention that before going to Monkey Republic the driver did take us to another guest house, of which we said no to!! So we jumped in and a short drive to another and better guest house (we hope), only the same one as before that RAT said no to. This one must be nice then!! A really quick and easy check in, room was very clean, you could smell the fressness as soon as the door opened. $7 a night, great location, a stone throw from the beach, close to the centre but far enough away too!! Happy Days!
Most days here all merged into one. 8 days consisted of: Laizing by the beach topping up our tans, eating good food at our top restaurant "Mick & Craigs" This is where we met a lovely couple Pat and Alan who we spent time together over dinner. R was amazed to see jacket potatoe on the menu, of which she had a craving for, for many days!! Chiva's Shack bar was directly on the beach, many days RAT would chill out and watch the sun set. It was here we met the guys from OZ/Sydney: Melissa, Courtney, Anna, Steve, Pete & Jason. All hit the town a few nights and partied till late. Nap House Bar, Utopia Bar and of course Chivas Shack. Fire throwers on the beach, very dangerous but looked fun, RAT was temped but that's as far as it went. We don't want any injuries now...
Girls and Boys on the beach everyday, averaged between 13-20 years!! Great english, they would sell anything they could: friendship bracelets, earings, headbands, rings, all sorts. Everyday we would get hassled by them, the little money they make goes towards there school fees, very sad. They would be so made up by getting a $. If you buy from one kid, your then entering a dangerous game, the other kids would then make you feel so bad, that you then have to buy from the others. RAT built up a good friendship with them all, in particular Leah and Saron. One day they took T to the market and showed off there amazing bartering skills, a few bargains were sure to be had.
Our last night at Sihanoukville. Saron joined us for dinner at Mick & Craigs. Before dinner we had to go to Sarons house so she could ask her parents if it was ok for her to join us for a few hours. So we go to her house... All we can say is "How thank full and lucky we are to have what we have. A wooden shack was her home, no bed just the wooden floor, she had nothing but was the happiest girl and was so grateful for everything. We bought her ice cream and her face was made up, the memories will stay with us forever!!
