Our time at Barb & Norm is almost up. We are still here for a couple of days and then they are taking us back to Omaha where we will catch the bus to our next destination……. La Cross Wisconsin. What we are going to do there I'll save for another blog…. we need to keep things interesting so you'll just have to wait and see:-)
For the last week and a half we stayed in the Sandhills of Nebraska, rural country where you'll find ranch after ranch. Cows grazing, old fashioned windmills on the hills, green grass and high temperatures….. very high. In some ways it seems that time stood still and everyday life just eased on by. It's the place where you'll find cowboys & cowgirls. With that in mind our host were so kind to take us to a rodeo…. Something I've always wanted to experience and now I got the change. This rodeo also had a fair which in this case means that, mostly kids, can show the vegetables they've grown, show their calf which they groomed, patchwork they've done, pies they have baked…. You name it and you'll find it. Everything is judged and the winners get a ribbon.
The rodeo itself is a blast. There are so many different categories…. bull riding, bareback, steer wrestling, rope and tie and lots more but the one which got my attention the most is the little kids that ride the sheep. It was hilarious! The little devils hung in there and tried to set the best time.
Maybe because it's not living life in the fastlane over here people got some time on their hands….. I guess most of you heard of Stonehenge but I'll bet almost none of you have heard of Carhenge….. A family in Alliance, which is about an hour's drive from here, thought it would be a nice family effort to build a replica of Stonehenge but instead of using stones they used cars hens Carhenge…. Check out the Whitman photo album if you want to see some pictures.
Barb & Norm really opened their home for us. The home cooking was a treat and the stories about growing up in the states as a child were amazing and gave a lot of insight in how thing were done in the past. Norm has a lot of projects going on and is a man full of ideas. They've started this homestead about seven years ago. It's a lot of work for the both of them and there is still much to do but isn't that always the case? Barb introduced us to hamburger soup. A tasty dish which is more of a stew than a soup. Tonight we have a Dutch meal planned for them…. Hutspot wit Arretjescake for dessert…. Let's see how that goes:-)
