Lhasa
24 hours on a train and 3 police checks later we were allowed into Tibet. Huge police and military presence, including artillery, here and permits only began to be issued a few days ago, (having been stalled during March) and then stopped again to groups less than 3 so we feel honored to be here.
We have acclimatized already as the train took us to 5400 meters and Lhasa is around 3400. Still a bit breathless on stair climbs. Days have been warm but snow falls on the surrounding mountains each night so as soon as the sun drops it is cold. Food has been fantastic the whole trip so far and we are both well. Nevs shoulder is constantly being worked so is always improving.
Our guide Tsering (condition of permit is we have a guide with us at all times to visit sights and for travel outside Lhasa) is lovely, very knowledgeable and perfect English having been educated in India. He clearly loves Tibet and we look forward to his company as we overland to the Nepal/Tibet border.
There are only a handful of tourists here so we are able to take our time, e.g. This morning we spent an interesting 3 hours at the Bakhora kora and Jokhang temple which in tourist season groups are only allowed 15 minutes.
