So the last 48 hours have been magical. I left Chiang Mai via mini bus for a lovely place called Pai. I had heard so many great reviews about this place so I was very intrigued to get there and make my own opinion. After the 3 hour journey which consisted of 726 turns (yes some poor backpacker did count the turns, not me I may add!) I arrived in the beautiful settlement named Pai. Pai is a lovely little town made up of copias little cafe's and bars and bamboo huts! After what seemed like a small trek, considering I had both backpacks on, I arrived at my hostel 'KK hut'. I stayed in a dorm with 4 others downstairs and 4 others upstairs. The dorm consisted of many mattresses on the floor with mosquito nets over each. The bathroom was even more basic but I seem to have adjusted to this pretty quickly! I have now realised that toilet paper and a toilet seat is a pure luxury! That evening I shared a beer with a German guy named 'Chris' and then wandered into Pai and bumped into two English girls named Laura and Anna who had been on my elephant discovery day. We all had dinner together :) Chris and I then hired a moped each and the four of us drove up the hillside to watch a guy play with fire, relax and enjoy another beer. Chang and Leo seem to be my favourite! My second day in Pai was great fun, after having a very relaxing morning a group of us had lunch together, there was a Czech, German, Korean and English, this is why I love travelling, have lunch with a bunch of strangers from all over the world and share stories on our country and our travels. Chris and I headed to a waterfall on our mopeds but on the way we stopped at a viewpoint where we met a Canadian guy who then followed us to the waterfall, so our scooter gang became 3. The waterfall was a lot of fun, there was not much water as we are currently in the dry season but there was certainly enough to slide down the rock face. There were two 'slides' which had been naturally created in the rocks. A lot of fun!
That evening a group of us (an Australian girl 'Holly' was added to the mix this time) headed into pai for street food and a few beers. So Chris, holly and I went to a bar which was pretty cool, it felt as if I was sitting in someone's cosy garden, and joined two more German guys and we all played jenga for an hour or so! For our last drink we found this super cute bar which was accessed via a back alley. In the middle of the outside bar there was a fire pit and also a jewellery shop to the side which had the most interesting an beautiful jewellery but I had to resist! Two American girls 'Kellie and Livia' were working at this bar so it was lovely to see them!
This morning, Chris, Holly and another German girl and I rode our scooters to a nearby canyon for a small hike. It was great fun. At first I bottled walking over a thin ridge so I walked around the outer way, unbeknown to me I was going to have to walk over this ridge on our way back! But at least I faced my fears! You don't learn anything unless you push yourself out of your comfort zone right! From here we rode to a coffee shop 'coffee in love' which is supposed to have the best coffee in Thailand. I enjoyed a banana coffee frappe and it was certainly very good!
This afternoon I am heading back to chiang Mai to catch the night bus to Bangkok. Currently sat in a mini bus which is full of Chinese, I am the only non Asian in here!
I have found the last few days really interesting. Socialising with individuals from all the way around the world has been beautiful. There is a sense of community with backpackers, everyone looks our for everyone. You meet and pack together, disperse and them meet more. It is a beautiful journey :)
