Today was my favourite day so far! We went and explored New Orleans (after I had gotten far too excited over the continental breakfast where I made my first ever waffle and loaded up my bag with goodies for the day ahead!)
We walked down to the oldest still functioning cathedral in the USA! It was beautiful inside! It was really quite calming sitting inside. From here we walked down to the Mississippi River and took the obligatory tourist photos! We went the the French quarter flea market which was really cool to see, there was so much that I wanted to buy but of course the budget does not allow for those kind of purchases!
We also went to the cafe demont (oldest cafe which is open 24 hours a day) which is apparently famous for it's coffee and beignets which are similar to donuts. Personally I didn't see what was so great about it but I did find it funny that all the waitresses and waiters were Chinese...which I thought was particularly odd seeing as we were in New Orleans. There was a man singing jazz to us the whole time we were there (just a random man on the street). That's what I really loved about New Orleans, all the street singers and jazz bands. After this we went to the Louisiana state museum, I loved this museum! It had a whole section on the effects that hurricane Katerina had in the area. It was clear how much devastation the area had had to deal with. Even after a mandatory evacuation had been announced 100,000 people still stayed in the area! A lot of people died after the hurricane hit because of the poor response systems, the residents of New Orleans felt like the government had forgotten them. The work that went into rebuilding the area was astounding! And the community spirit was remarkable! It was so good to see this museum! I have loved the attitudes, vibrant colours and bohemian vibe of the area and the music! We went to visit a cemetery as New Orleans is famous for them, this was odd, the have like houses for families bodies that sit above the ground. I didn't feel very comfortable on the cemetery so we didnt stay for too long!
Later on that day we decided to go back to the museum to visit the mardi gras exhibition, this was a slight mistake as we got stuck in a huge downpour of rain so all got soaked and then the museum was shut, instead we went and sat by a jazz band.
That evening we had dinner at a bar which had a jazz band playing, a young black guy joined the band for two songs who sang like Louis Armstrong and tried his hardest to get the crowd involved. All in all I have loved my time in New Orleans!!
