Selemat Datang (Welcome) once more...
Have had quite a mixed few days since we last wrote. Spent our last couple of days in Pangkor chilling out on the beach, lazing in the sun and swimming in the sea! Such a beautiful place, would definately recommend it to anyone. Since we last blogged we have seen quite a few wild monkeys on Pulau Pangkor... just before we were about to leave, we were walking back from the beach, we saw a whole tribe of about 20 including quite a few babies. Also seen lots of wild hornbills. Will upload photo's and video's of all soon =)
We left Pangkor on 08/05/10, and had a bit of a trek to get to our next destination (Pulau Langkawi) where we are staying at the mo. Started by getting a taxi to the ferry which took us back to mainland Malaysia. Arrived back on solid ground at about 6.30pm, and then had a 2.5 hour bus journey from Lumut, on the coast, to Ipoh where we were catching our train at 1am! The bus driver was a nutter, and for the first time ever we were overtaking in a full sized bus! Had quite a few hours to waste when we got to Ipoh, so went and got a WICKED mughali (Indian) curry, in a very posh restaurant.. with very over helpful staff. Even then.. it only cost RM25.00 for the two of us, which is around 5GBP! Then went back and played scrabble at the train station, and actually bumped into somebody we had met before.. a local we had started chatting to in the street a few days earlier.... very bizarre!! Finally got on the train, and it was a bit of a rough journey (horrible, horrible lol) The train was bouncing around, to the extent that I think we were in the air a few times, and swaying violently from side to side (its amazing what you can sleep through lol). Got about 2 hours sleep, so were pretty knackered when we arrived at our stop, Alor Setar, the next morning at 7.30am!
Alor Setar itself seemed to be a fairly quiet town.. mind you it was stupid o'clock in the morning. Had some trouble finding the right bus station, as the map in our 'rough guides' book was not very accurate! Must have looked lost, as a friendly local stopped on his bike and pointed us in the right direction.... We then sat waiting for the bus, and were up and down like a 'jack-in-a-box', as each time we got up to check if it was the right bus, two taxi drivers would shout 'NO, NO, SIT.. NOT THIS ONE'. Very helpful again though, and eventually after a 30min or so wait got us on the right bus to the coast, costing a grand total of RM3.00 for the two of us. Everyone in Alor Setar was really friendly and helpful, it was almost like everyone wanted to be the first to help you. Even when we got off the bus, another local who was on the bus also showed us the way to the ferry etc =). Finally got the ferry, which took an hour and a half, and a half an hour taxi to the beach that we are staying at, 'Pantai Cenang'. All in all we were travelling for 20 hours!!!!!
By the time we got here, we were walking around in the midday sun, loaded up with our bags.. and must have tried abour 6 places looking for a room before finding the one we are at now, The rainbow lodge, which is down a dirt track right out in the countryside.. a 5 minute walk from the main strip, and well within budget! Have got lots of fields with Ox's and Chicken, and lots of little moutains in the distance (More like hills I suppose lol). It all very beautiful, scenic and peaceful. Tried bartering down the cost of the room, from the RM60.00 that we are paying, but although he could not do any cheaper.. he agreed to give us a house for the same price!!!!! We have a Living/Dining Room, Kitchen (with fridge), Big bedroom, and Big Bathroom. Might even try to do a spot of cooking later this week =)!
Since we've been here, we have had a couple of meals, last night (09/05/10) in a really nice arabic restaurant, wandered down the beach and the main strip of eateries and shops... and caught up on lots of sleep! Got woken up in the middle of the night by a massive storm, turns out we've got a tin roof.. so it sounded like a tornado, could barely hear each other speak! Today, we woke up quite late, and went down for some food, and to do some much needed laundry... and we are now going to go chill on the beach =).
Will upload photo's and video's tonight, our time.
Chao for now. Lots of Love
