Nikki's Travels
Hello again,
I'm sure you'll all be smug to hear that we've had our first day of rain, it poured down! Luckliy it was as we were driving so we managed to escape most of it.
We left queenstown earlier in the week which was sad as we loved the place so much but we needed to move on, which we did.... but we went the wrong way, oops, after an hour of driving on a dusty track complete with free roaming sheep, cows, deers, water fords and only passing one other car we realised perhaps we wern't on highway 6 after all! Error. We were literally on a road to no where so had to turn back and camp up for the night back in a town near queenstown called Wanaka. In Wanaka we did however see sheep being hearded up the road which was quite entertaining and seemed to make it all worth while!
The next day we travlled up to the fox glacier, only just making it after driving for 120k on the red fuel light - why doesn't this country have any petrol stations! We camped out around lake Matheson and the next day trekked for 4 and a half hours to climb over the glacier, it was brilliant! I can't believe how dangerous and exhausting the walk up the mountain was, and while we were on the glacier there were several loud crashing noises as huge chunks of the ice melted and collapsed into the river, scary!
Yesterday we went horsetrekking in Westport which was one of the funniest events yet - after what seemed like a good start, within 10 minutes Nosh was crying in fear ( i wasn't meant to tell you that) and then gill fell off after we galloped up the beach (definetely wasn't meant to tell you that!) The trek itself was gorgeous and giving that the girls had never ridden before we all had a lot of fun (well actually nosh didn't at all but at least she tried!)
We're now in Kiakoura and have just got back from a 3 hour whale watching boat trip where we saw 4 massive sperm whales! Aside from the severe sea sickness the trip was pretty cool, unfortunately most of the photos i took were of the water and not the whales but there are a few good ones worth a look in the NZ album.
By the way, the weather is gorgeous again today! ;)
Missing you all, but not the cold weather one bit,
Thanks for all your messages xxx
