G'day mate!
...arrived in oz on the and have been non stop since then!!
As australia wasnt a top priority on my travelling list i only have two and a half weeks to cram as much as i can in and i seem to be doing pretty well so far!!
After flying into sydney (and freezing for an hour... i was still in shorts and t-shirt...all aussies in hoodies and scarfs!!) I jumped straight on a plane to cairns for some sunshine and heat!
Cairns- was ok... think that i was a little depressed after leaving south east asia (I LOVED IT!!) felt as if i wasnt travelling any more. Foods the same as home and every thing is just a little too easy...
Still, I had a good time meet a lovely girl called Nayla and we explored Cairns together!Cairns doesnt have a beach but does apparently have a stunning Lagoon... it closed the day we arrived! How annoying! The surrounding areas and harbour were really nice though saw a beautiful sunset and the moon rise from behind the mounatins! ( oh forgot to say saw the sun rise on the plane! WOW!!!was a complete this is why i am traveling moment!!was stunning!) Visted Tjapaki, an aboriginal park which was brilliant gave me a really good insight in to aboriginal culture and history. Had a couple of goes with a boomerang and with spear trowing... i was suprisingly good!! (haha!!) both my throws came back to me ( even if i did nearly take out several people in the process!) I also manged to make fire with just two sticks !! ( watch out jungle jane!! )
Mum Dad and J, you'll remember the skyrail and scenic railway! well I didnt! Was quite funny getting to the top and thinking i'm sure ive been here before! Was worth doing it again though saw some beautiful views over the rainforest and the railway take you right the way through the mountains past all the waterfalls. Hd two very crazy nights outs in cairns both nights in the woolshed... it literally was just a shed! lost of goon ( cheap boxed wine ) and dancing on tables involved!!
Whitsundays- Left cairns and headed straight to Arlie Beach for a tour of the whitsundays ...now known as the WETSUNDAYS!!Had been looking forward to the whitsundasy tour since arriving in OZ... Sun Sailing and diving... i got to sail and i got to dive but it was in the most CRAZY storms! IT WAS BRILLIANT!!hahah seriously i had expected a calm sail in the sun but there was something really exciting/ scaryabout sailing in massive storms, it really got the adrenalin pumping!! I was on a boat called Kiana with 13 other people...all a really good laugh! ( apart form one russian guy who just spent 3 days clinging t the rails being sick!! ) went to whitehaven beach which was BEAUTIFUL!! even in the rain! it did clear for a little so got some quick pictures in! Diving on the outer barrier reef was also brilliant... sharks turtles LOADS of different fish and lots of pretty coral! one thing i havent mentioned yet is the food!! we had a chef on board and he cooked some AMAZING meals better that have been eating while on dry land in oz...!!the sun sets were incerdible from the boat... as we were completely in the middle of the ocean the whole of the horizion would light up an amazing orange colour making the sails glow too... (see photos!!although they dont really do it justice) On the way home we had a man over board!!! ( well a hat!!) so we had to turn the boat around to rescue it! It was hilarious!! the captain couldnt see it...we were all shouting directions the guy with big hook was clinging on to the side of the boat and the hat seemed as though it didnt want to be rescued it must have taken at least 5 minutes before paul ( the guy with the hook) actually manged to get it... and then drop it ... not once... but twice! ( if your not finding that funny i guess you had to be there, as im in stitches writting this down!!)...so it was a good end to the trip!
Fraser Island -ahhh hervey bay!! the sun was shining!! for a whole day! a beautiful beach very very quiet and peaceful. It was lovely to just sit and relax on the beach for a day, before another 3 days of carnage!!
Up nice on early on the first day of fraser island to get our briefing on how to drive the 4x4, be dingo safe, and basically all the rules regulations and routes on the island!!
...then thast it sent off in a 4x4 with 10 other random people to explore the island for 3 days! no guide, no driver just us! watching the 4x4 being reversed on to the ferry was enough to scare me...none of us had ever driven a 4x4 before and its quite different to driving a car... even more so on sand! i had nothing to worry about??! (..well im still alive!there was one or two moments where i didnt think we would all make it!)
Lake mackensie was one of our main stops over the 3 days and it was stunning, crystal clear water... the finest sand i have ever put a foot on and the water was good enough to drink from as its a fresh water lake... a little bit of paradise!! :)
setting up the tents was good fun! i shared with two lovely ( but crazy) irish girls and we did quite well untill we found an extra pole...we could for the life of us figure out where it was supposed to go!...turns out it wasnt even ours!! duh!!
If you have looked at the pictures already youwill see we had a slight run in with the police! ...eekk!!
yeap as we were cooking ( an amazing spag bol!) the police turned up and were asking us alot of questions about when we had started to drink, who was driving first thing in the morning etc... as i had only had a sip of wine (i was cooking!) i said that i was driving first thing in the morning... knowing that i would be no where near the limit so it would all be ok.... how wrong was i!!!.... my alcohol level didnt even register but i wast told that i was in trouble...my reading was shocking... shockingly pathetic...!!!i was told to get drinking and that i had alot of catching up to do.... i was quite stunned and didnt really know what to make of it all untill both the police men opened up the back of the car a got a whole ice box of beer out! they were crazy! ended up partying with us all night and were completely wasted by the end of the night!! none of us could believe it but as they kept saying they were the only two policemen on the island so who was going to tell them off!! An extremely random but brilliant night!!....untill we woke up at about 4 swimming in our tent!! we were completely washed out... sleeping bags clothes, phones, cameras every thing ruined (its a good job i was drunk as i just left every thing in the car and passed out on my sleeping mat!! ) but i felt so sorry for the girls i would have been gutted if my camera was ruined! any way we spent the rest of the night in the car which was SO uncomfortable but at least it was dry!
