After a morning in Carlsbad caverns viewing the caves, rock formations and bats. We got back in our mobile sardine can and headed on our way to Santa Fe. Today wasn't going to be the longest drive on the trip but possibly one of the strangest or even paranormal drives as we would be stopping for lunch in Roswell, alien country.
So after a couple of hours of more desert, hills and more empty space we pulled into Roswell. If I am honest, if the city hadn't encounted extraterrestrial activity it wouldn't be somewhere you would normally visit. The town itself had nothing really going for it, very dated and run-down. On the other hand, with the history of roswell and its alien encounters known by most people on the planet it wasn't going to be a chance missed. In the town was small museum detailing alien encounters listed from as far back as the early 1930's including abductions, government cover-ups and of course Area 51. It was really interesting to read about, maybe a little far fetched but still all the same enjoyable. The area 51 stuff I found the most interesting with photo's of the location surrounded with armed guards and even arial photo's of the site. After a wonder round the museum we headed back to the van to make lunch before continuing on to the town of Santa Fe.
We pulled into our camp site about 4.00pm and set up tents on a rock hard, dusty campsite. The ground was that har I bent the tent peg trying to hammer it into the ground. Unfortunatly one member of the group had come down with a throat virus so unable to come with into the town and decided to stay in at the camp site to rest. The town itself reminded me of a Mexican town with a modern twist. The town was based around a central park with shops around it devised with narrow one way streets. Most of the buildings we made of clay, orange in colour and smoothed. There were exposed wooded beams at the top of the buildings with large door ways and windows. The modern twist was the fact half of the shops were art galleries or jewellery stores. We all split up to look around, due to our evening arrival most of the shops were closed but a few were still open to go in. We all met up to eat at the blue corn cafe, a Mexican restaurant above a shop. We ordered nacho's for everyone with beef and chicken. The plates were huge and topped with melted cheese and guacamole. As a group we engulfed 6 plates before we were happily full and ready to head back to the camp site. On route home we stopped to take pictures of the oldest house in America based just outside the town. After that we headed back to the camp site for a well earned sleep to recharge our batteries before monument valley.
