Our first day of not doing that much, before we start working. We decided to go to Church gate in the South. This is the Fort area which was built by the British ("didn't we used to own that") in colonial times. So basically lots of neo gothic style grandeur that's falling into decay, with a park where they still play cricket on a Sunday. After navigating the cows standing in the station (huge holy cows with huge twisty horns) you form a queue for a ticket. Each window has a huge queue (being British you join at the back) but then people skip the queue and push to the front to ask the clerk for a ticket. This we find is called first class, basically if you have the money to pay about ten times the price of second class you push and fight for your ticket first too. We got first class tickets after queuing in the second class queue. We made all the disapproving glances and noises that you do when people push in in the UK but they never even noticed. The reason for getting the first class ticket was the view from our room. Each day you see the pushing running mass of bodies trying to board the train in the second class carriages. The doors on the trains make no attempt to shut and the train waits for about 30 seconds then moves off at break neck speed without any warning. It seems the most prized place to be on the trains is hanging out the door (like a dog with its head out of a car window) by one arm. I was surprised to find a Handicapped carriage, which we boarded only to find it was also second class and we could have paid a second class fair to be in it. We were on 'til the end of the line so got to see half the city through the open train door as well as some huge birds of prey.On foot flanked by park and regal buildings we headed straight for the Gateway of India. We got sidetracked in looking for an ATM and ended up deciding we were short of salt and so we ended up in McDonalds. Yes its bad but it was just what we needed and we only had chips. The gate was huge but under maintenance so had scaffolding all over it which was a shame. Street traders tried to sell us everything from icecream to huge (about 10ft) yellow balloons! Next to the gateway was the poshest hotel in the Mumbai, the Taj Tower and Palace ($750 a night for a single!). After that it was lunch and as always It was amazing. Butter nan and Channa Masala (chickpeas). After that we walked back towards the station, passed the Ghandi statue and endless government buildings (well they have to have space for all the beaurocrats). As we passed some university buildings I saw a huge black shape fly across the road and into a tree. Nicole missed it but looking up into the tree I pointed out the two huge Bats hanging upside down with their wings crossed around them, and their faces looking down at us. Again we must have walked for miles, although the weather was much better being hot and less humid than before. Dinner we decided to return to the truck stop and discovered 'spring masala' an amazing thing that is a huge spring roll filled with Indian veg with masala sauce to dip it in. Yum!
