The place we are staying at is called the Tropic of Capricorn but everyone round here calls it Mama’s. The owner is a lovely old lady called Mama who looks after all her guests like they are her kids (or maybe grandkids) as they are mostly backpackers and young, but is also fearsome to people such as taxi drivers and staff who may try and take advantage. It was the first time we had gotten a fair price on the meter from an airport to a hotel in our whole trip when the driver heard we were staying with Mama, then when she sat down to chat to us and heard we had paid she gave us the money back as we were meant to be picked up by her son.
The hotel is basic but clean and our room has 2 ceiling fans to keep us cool and a reasonable double bed. The pool is tiny and doesn’t look great but we are on the cheap here. We went out to the back today and spent some time on the beach, we even got in the water for a bit, but only a paddle.
The only slightly annoying thing is that we don’t have a working shower in the day as we are too close to the laundry and it steals all the water when its going.
For dinner tonight we ate veg curry at Mama’s but then we heard there was a free show next door at the backpacker’s place there with traditional dancing. We came in half way through but the fire display was pretty impressive and the resort looks nice too and we can just pop over there any time. We plan to have dinner there soon.
