Our final stop in Germany was Hamburg. The main reason was to see the lovely Jennie. We met this lovely German at university and we knew we had to make a stop off in her hometown to visit her!
After dropping our bags off at our rather odd hotel, we headed to Hamburg Port on the metro. Our German beauty rushed over from work to meet us in the freezing cold winds. We hopped onto a ferry that took us further along the port to see the sights without the freezing weather battering us down. The harbour is of big importance to the city, most of the local companies are involved in the harbour and shipping industry. Jennie herself works for one of the companies and had lots to tell us. Beautiful large buildings lined the harbour from historic fish markets to modern multi-million pound architectural buildings.
Further inland the large port river splits into smaller canals that wind around old warehouse buildings, previously used to house items to be exported. The area was great to walk around with a mixture old and new buildings. Modern bridges and pathways had been built to make it more accessible to walk around the area. Most of it has been refurbished into new swanky apartments with flashy independent coffee shops and bars. However, Jennie mentioned that the area is really quiet in the evening as lots of the accomodation is holiday homes and second houses.
After leaving the harbour and canals we walked inland to the centre of the city. With busy shopping areas and large parks, we could see the city being a great outdoors place in the summer months. Our last sight was the Hamburg Town Hall, a grand stone building with a beautiful clock tower. We do love a good old fashioned stone building or church, even when were standing in the rain.
That evening we were eating at Jennies flat with her partner Flo. On the way over we stopped off for a local Hamburg cinnamon pastry and a few shopping items. There flat was close to town with two metros nearby so it was very easy to get to. After a steep walk up a number of floors we arrived at their cosy flat and finally got to meet Flo for the first time. After tucking into a delicious homemade meal made by the resident chief, with a bit if Jennies help. We relaxed in the living room, talking about travelling and catching up on each other's lives, we were so relaxed Nicole was nearly falling to sleep!
We headed back to our odd hotel, after wishing our German beaut goodbye, and for the first time in our whole stint of travelling PAID for WiFi!!! Lucky we did though or we wouldn't have found our next hotel in Copenhagen, even if it was €3.
