SEX, DRUGS, AND R...MUSEUMS?
Flirtation: attention without intention. ~Max O'Rell, John Bull and His Island
I started by day a little late today. I went to go visit my brother's university about 30 minutes outside of town. I then had to go pick up my Amsterdam pass that I ordered the night before. This pass gave me access to museums as well as free public transportation for 3 days. My brother had class, but I was going to meet up with him later to visit the Amsterdam historic museum.
As soon as I got my pass at central station I started my museum tour with an old protestan church named Oude Kerk. The Oude Kerk is Amsterdam's oldest stone building, originally built in the 13th and 14th century. The Oude Kerk is placed right in the middle of the Amsterdam redlight district. You find hookers offering their services in a very visual fashion literally right across the street from the church, but I was not there for that today...I then headed down the street to this 17th century house with a hidden Catholic church in the attic. This hidden church 'in the attic' was built during the Reformation, when Catholics were forbidden to hold public services.
I then went to go find a phone to call my brother to meet him at the historic museum. After about 30 minutes of looking, I just borrowed a phone from someone. I met my brother at 3pm. The museum was really interesting showing the histoy of how Amsterdam grew over the years and how most of the canals were man-made. That`s what really gave Amsterdam its charm: the canals surrounding the city.
At 5pm, we went back home to take a little snooze. Tony was having a party in his appartment. He had one last Thursday, too, and planned to have one every Thursday. When I got there, I met up with Chingching, a BEAUTIFUL little Chinese girl that had such a seductive look to her. Her name was pretty cool, too. I also met Elana, her roommate, a really cool girl from Spain. Out of everyone that I met there, she was the one that I had the most chemistry with. When we flirted, it just clicked. Also, she was the only one that was close to my age; she was 26. After my time in Amsterdam, I wished I would have gotten to know her better.
The party ended up being CRAZY with about 40 people in a tiny 2 and a half appartment. There were even people overflowing to the hallway! At the party I also met girls from Montreal (Jessica, MariPier, Lily, and Amelie). I had such a great time meeting people from all around the world.
We then went back to Candela with Chingching, Tony, my brother, and this other tiny Spanish girl (forgot her name). Chingching showed me her hiphop moves, because she dances in a dance crew back at home. She moved soooo well! On the way back home (at 5am), we took a taxi. Taxis in Amsterdam are either a BMW or a Mercedes! I felt everyone had one there, but then we found out that they get 40 000$ return on their cars.
The next morning, we had to go see the flirty Dutch girl from Wednesday again. Her name was Kim. My brother and Tony were buying tickets to a ski trip. We then went for pancakes at "The Pancake Bakery". The pancakes (which kind of looked like crepes) were sooo good!!! Even orgasmic…
Tony and my brother then went to a coffeeshop while I went to more museums. This time it was the Diamond museum (Canada is 3rd largest diamond producer in the world!). Then I went to the Rijksmuseum, a museum dedicated to arts and history. There was also a cool little exposition on Rembrandt, Holland`s famous painter. Next was the Van Gogh museum. I loved this museum, because I got to learn a lot about the history of this famous painter. Although I am not an art connoisseur, I did not appreciate his art as much. I feel he was a mediocre painter compared to others of his time. He might have been the father of contemporary, but I thought he tried too hard.
I got back at around 7pm, and took another small nap before leaving at 10pm to the predrink party at a girl`s apartment. We were then going to the Carnaval party. We had to dress up, and earlier that week, my brother had bought "marijuana" glasses. So I dressed myself in green, and went as a…I was not really sure…
We went to this club called Club Home. I met other Canadian girls (from Ontario), this really cool chick from PEI who now lives in Montreal (Sarah), and some Dutch girls. I also met this crazy Swedish girl, named Freda, who did not make any sense. Not even 15 minutes in the club and these two Dutch girls aggressively came to talk to me (ahhh Amsterdam!). I found it so cool, but felt the need to go find Kim (she said she was going to be at the party).
I finally found Kim, who was dressed in this cute red polka dot dress. We ended up having a really long, deep conversation (surprisingly) with these intermittent bits of flirtation. Then, I ended up talking with her friend (which now that I think about it, she might of pawned me off to her), but I cut the conversation short to go join Tony and my brother. I found Chingching and met this really cool Ecuadorian chick named Lorena. We left the club at 5am…another night of debauchery!
Saturday was spent taking a canal tour then the sex museum…awesome! I then joined Tony and my brother and this other guy named Brian, and we went to Van Dobben, this famous restaurant that serves Croquette, a fried ball filled with ragout. We then went to a coffeeshop, named Grey Area, and relaxed there while taking shots of...
We were in the perfect mood now to go through the Red Light district. Tony really wanted me to hook up with a prostitute. We saw a few really good looking ones. I would go and talk to them asking them their name, age, nationality...and of course if they would be willing to give me a student discount from the tradition price of 50 euros. But no...no girl wanted to give me a discount. Then again, I never believed in paying for sex, it was just not my thing. Why pay when you can get it for free? Granted you will have to work harder for it, but at least you will have a sense of accomplishment...
Our night led us to going to this predrink and then going out...back to Candela. I talked with Freda some more that night, and the more I talked with her, the more I thought she was so weird. Suddenly, a merengue came on and I grabbed Freda and started dancing. Latin music made me reminisce of my wonderful time in South America...I was still not over my high from there. She took me to the club accross the street and we danced some more. Then, she asked the dreaded question that no guy wants to hear from a girl..."Are you gay?"
WHAT???? Am I gay??? What kind of question was that? She attempted to explain that I danced really well, and was flirting, but did not go further then that. That`s when I told her: "Isn't that what flirting is? Attention without intention?" If I wanted to do something I would have done it by now. The night ended at 5am, as usual.
The next morning was dedicated to the science museum called NEMO...the best science museum that I have EVER been to. It was huge, and everything was hands on (great for kids!). Today was bittersweet because I have gotten attached to Amsterdam and the people I met, but I had to move on. I said my last goodbye to Tony and my brother and left to Brussels at 7pm.
