During breakfast this morning, I met this guy named Michael, from England. He was taking Spanish lessons here, and was going to Peru soon. I gave him a lot of tips on Cusco (how I miss Cusco!). I left soonafter at around 9:30am. I took the 10am bus to Valparaiso.
Valparaiso is a docking city. It has the main port to access Chile. There is a lot of history with this city because of all of the wars (War of the Pacific and War of Independence). It was also the place where Pablo Neruda (a litterature Nobel laureate and important figure in Chile's history) lived.
I did not reserve for a hostel, so I had to find one. I had gotten the names of two really good hostels so I went to the first one that was a 15 minute walk from the bus terminal. Valparaiso's center is really small (everything is almost walking distance, however it is built on a hill so it could get a bit tiring). As soon as I got to the hostel, I was welcomed by a young, really cute couple that owned the hostel for a year now.
Gustavo, one of the owners showed me around. The hostel was in an old 1800s colourful buiding that had art all over the walls. Afterwards, Gustavo's girlfriend, took about 45 minutes explaining to be the city that she obviously loves so much. she took the time to tell me all of the great places to go and restaurants as well.
I did not plan to visit much today so I took the time to call back home (I had to figure out whewn I had to be back home to start my volunteer medic course). I found out that I had to be back on the 3rd of September!!! I was so dissapointed because now, I had to cut my trip by about a week! So for about 3 hours, I was looking on the internet for a cheap ticket back home on the 3rd. Things start getting gloomy when you are booking your ticket back home...
While I was on the internet, I met these girls from the United States that were studying in Buenos Aires for a semester. They invited me for supper (I still did not find a ticket, but felt that I had to get my mind off it). We had a lot of fun talking about our adventures so far, and they told me that they can show me around when I get to Buenos Aires (up to now, I have 6 contacts that I can call in Buenos Aires to show me around, it seems like everyone lives there!).
On our way back home, we stopped by a pastery shop to pick up dessert and bring it home at the hostel. Valparaiso has so many pastery shops (one in each corner). At the hostel, we had tea and desert with these other Americans from California. I went to bed early again (around 11pm). Tomorrow, I was visiting the city...
